Step One: What Do You Have? What Do You Need?
As promised in my last post, I’ll now go over what you need to start your permissions search. It’s not that complicated once you make a plan. This can be a linear plan (for you left-brain thinkers) or a diagram (for you right-brain thinkers). As long as you gather all the information, your organizational style doesn’t matter.
You obviously know what it is you are using-an essay, a cartoon, a newspaper article, song lyrics, and so on-but there’s no shortcut now. You need the details.
1. What is the complete title of the material you are using?
2. Who is the creator of the material you are using?
3. What is the source of the material?
4. Who owns the copyright?
If you don’t have all this information yet, don’t panic! Simply leave the question unanswered until you find the missing information. How do you find the missing information? Stay tuned for the next post!
